Abdul Mahdi intends to open the Green Zone to citizens
Prime Minister-designate Adil Abdul Mahdi announced on Wednesday his intention to open the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad to ordinary citizens following the formation of the government. During a visit to the Council of Representatives, Abdul Mahdi said that he was hoping to "break the barrier between the official and the citizen" and that opening the Green Zone, which has been closed since 2003, would be symbolic of that.
